Longarm Tips from Diane

Prepare quilt top

1. Press all seams flat and remove any wrinkles.

2. Trim any loose threads from the back that will show through light fabric on the front.

3. Trim loose threads from the front

4. Remove any lint or pet hair.

5. Is there a definite top to quilt? If yes, pin a note to quilt indicating top.

6. Check to see if borders lay flat. If not read information on borders.

Prepare backing

1. Backing fabric and batting will need to be at least 8 to 10 inches larger then quilt top. An extra 4 to 5 inches are needed on all sides for the longarm.

2. Square backing fabric by folding in half lengthwise matching ends to see if fabric lays flat. If not scoot ends over left or right until you get a flat seam. Trim both ends if needed.

3. If backing is seamed remove selvages. Sew pieces together matching selvages but sew about a one and a half inch seam then trim off selvages leaving a half inch seam.

Selvages are thicker and may give seam a bulkier look, cause extra work for the longarm needle to penetrate fabric and will shrink more then the rest of the fabric if ever washed causing puckering around seam.

4. Press backing to remove wrinkles and press all seams open.

5. Is there a definite top to quilt back? If yes, pin note to quilt indicating top.

Borders

BORDERS THAT DO NOT LAY FLAT MAY PUCKER OR BE PLEATED WHEN LONGARM QUILTED.

1.Before adding borders check to see if piecing the blocks has left a square quilt. (Note: Quilt can be a rectangle but square meaning that corners are at 90-degree angle and measurements on the sides are the same and the top and bottom are the same). Fold in half lengthwise then widthwise. Does it lay flat and are sides even? Trim ends or adjust your seams if needed.

2. Option 1-Measure length of quilt down the middle. Cut side border to this length.

Option 2-Measure length of quilt down middle and both ends. Add these numbers and divide that by three. Use that measurement to cut border at. This method is used if there is more then a half inch difference in the three measurements.

3. Fold border and quilt top in half and mark center of both. Match centers and pin in place. Pin both ends. Pin between center and ends easing them together.

4. Sew side borders on to quilt top and then use same method for top and bottom borders.

5. Check to see if this has left quilt square by folding lengthwise then widthwise. matching ends. It should hang straight and flat with no waving.
